Those Chicks Spinning Them Sticks By: Sabrina Cortez

"Colorguard; the icing on the cake" is what Mr. Myers is always
telling us. For those of you who don't know what colorguard is, we are
the girls or guys who are spinning the colorful flags that are on the
field with the band.
For me, this is only my second year to be on the guard, and this
year has been the hardest year for us all. At the end of last
year, we had a guard containing seven girls, and for two of the girls, it
was be their last year. Over the summer, we found out that one of our
coaches was moving, and we would be left with her sister to coach us to
perfection. On top of losing one of our coaches, we also lost our band
director, Mr. Gonzales, and a girl due to other school activities. Having
only six girls left, we were told by our band director Mr. Hinds that if
another girl dropped that there would be no more colorguard for the rest
of the year and no more in the future. Hoping that no more would quit, we
got a rude awakening two weeks before contest when we lost yet another girl
due to personal conflicts. All the girls were crying because we all knew
what was going to be said to us the next time we walked through that
band hall door. We all prepared ourselves for the next day but only to
find out that he believed in us and knew that even though there was only
five of us we could pull it off.
Unfortunately, we got a two at contest which is not the best but
is not bad. We hope to get a one next year since it will be our year to
qualify for state marching contest. Next year, there will only be two
girls returning: Serina England and myself, but we intend to make it
the best year we have ever had.
